Step back in time: In 1853, Europeans made Riverton one of their first New Zealand settlements. But they were relative latecomers. Polynesians had arrived about 900 years earlier from the Eastern Pacific, naming the southern region Murihiku - the whale's tail, the important end, the rudder.
